The Current GE Zoneline PTAC Line: AZES, AZHS, and AZVS Series
GE Appliances has updated the Zoneline product line to the current Series A platform. If your project or procurement documentation references the older AZ45 or AZ65 model designations, those have been replaced by the AZES and AZHS series respectively. The newer AZVS variable-speed series is an additional offering that was not part of the previous line.
AZES Series — Fixed-Speed Cooling with Electric Resistance Heat
The AZES series is GE’s current fixed-speed PTAC with electric resistance heat backup. It is the direct replacement for the AZ45 series and fits the same standard 42″ × 16″ wall sleeve that GE Zoneline has used since 1961, making it a straightforward drop-in replacement for existing installations.
Cooling Capacities and Efficiency (AZES Series)
| BTU Size | Voltage | Cooling BTU | EER |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7,000 | 208V / 230V | 7,200 | 13.4 / 13.2 |
| 9,000 | 208V / 230V | 9,500 | 12.5 / 12.3 |
| 12,000 | 208V / 230V | 12,000 / 12,100 | 11.7 / 11.6 |
| 15,000 | 208V / 230V | 14,500 / 14,800 | 10.6 / 10.5 |
All AZES models run on 208/230V with a universal heater — the heat output is determined by the power connection kit selected (15A, 20A, or 30A circuit). A 265V version is not available in the AZES series; 265V buyers should specify the AZHS series.
Electric Heat Output by Power Connection Kit (230/208V)
| Circuit | Electric Heat Output | Heater Watts |
|---|---|---|
| 15 amp (RAK315P/D) | 8,100 / 6,600 BTU | 2,400 / 1,960W |
| 20 amp (RAK320P/D) | 11,600 / 9,400 BTU | 3,400 / 2,780W |
| 30 amp (RAK330P/D) | 16,300 / 13,400 BTU | 4,800 / 3,930W |
A power connection kit is required on all Zoneline chassis and must be ordered separately.
AZHS Series — Fixed-Speed Cooling with Heat Pump
The AZHS series is GE’s fixed-speed heat pump PTAC (PTHP) and the direct replacement for the AZ65 series. It includes all features of the AZES series plus heat pump heating operation, a reverse-cycle defrost system, three-stage heating logic, and optional Internal Condensate Removal (ICR).
The AZHS operates the heat pump down to 25°F outdoor temperature before switching to electric resistance backup heat. Below that threshold, the unit automatically transitions to full electric resistance heat. A “Boost Heat” mode allows the heat pump and 1KW of supplemental electric heat to run simultaneously at stage one, increasing heating output in borderline conditions.
Cooling and Heat Pump Performance (AZHS Series, 208/230V)

| 15,000 | 14,600 | 10.4 | 13,500 | 3.4 |
AZVS Series — Variable-Speed “Perfect Control” Heat Pump
The AZVS series (GE Zoneline Perfect Control) is GE’s premium variable-speed inverter PTAC. It uses a variable-speed twin-rotor compressor with dual electronic expansion valves (EEV) and delivers cooling output from 4,000 to 15,500 BTU — continuously modulated to match room demand rather than cycling on and off at full capacity.
AZVS Performance (230/208V)
| Model | Cooling BTU | SEER2 | Cooling Watts | Heat Pump BTU | HSPF2 | HP Watts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AZVS15DCX (208V) | 14,200 | 16.3 | 1,300 | 13,500 | 8.0 | 1,160 |
| AZVS15DCX (230V) | 14,300 | 16.3 | 1,295 | 13,500 | 8.0 | 1,160 |
The AZVS is rated at SEER2 16.3 for cooling efficiency and HSPF2 8.0 for heating efficiency — both measured under the updated AHRI 210/240-2024 test standard. The variable-speed heat pump operates down to 0°F outdoor temperature before switching to electric resistance backup, compared to 25°F for the fixed-speed AZHS.
Key AZVS Differentiators vs. Fixed-Speed Models
- Variable-speed compressor modulates output from 4,000–15,500 BTU based on real-time room conditions
- Heat pump operation down to 0°F (vs. 25°F for AZHS)
- SEER2 16.3 / HSPF2 8.0 efficiency ratings

- Two-way communicating thermostat capability (with RAK190V thermostat)
- Makeup Air module available as a factory-installed option
- On-board Wi-Fi SmartHQ management ready (requires connection to building Wi-Fi)
The AZVS is available in Makeup Air (MUA) and UVC (ultraviolet-C disinfection) configurations in addition to the standard and corrosion-protected variants.
Standard Features — All GE Zoneline PTAC Series
Refrigerant: R-454B
All current Zoneline models use R-454B refrigerant, which GE identifies as the most environmentally responsible refrigerant in its class. R-454B has a significantly lower global warming potential than the R-410A used in earlier Zoneline generations.
42″ × 16″ Standard Wall Sleeve — Fits All Zoneline Since 1961
GE Appliances has maintained the same wall sleeve dimensions (42″ wide × 16″ high × 13-3/4″ deep) since the original Zoneline units were introduced in 1961. Current AZES, AZHS, and AZVS chassis fit existing sleeves without modification, making them a direct drop-in replacement for any prior-generation GE Zoneline unit. Available wall sleeve options include the RAB42MG (insulated galvanized steel), RAB42PG (polymer/SMC, corrosion-resistant), and the RAB42MGSTC (acoustic sleeve, raises STC rating to 31).
Electronic Touch Controls with Auto-Dimming LED Display
All Series A units use a touchpad control panel with a large white LED temperature readout. The display automatically dims to avoid disturbing occupants in dark rooms. Temperature can be displayed in Fahrenheit or Celsius via the auxiliary control settings.
Freeze Sentinel
When the unit is plugged in — including when it is in the OFF mode — the Freeze Sentinel monitors room temperature and activates the electric heater if temperature drops to 41°F. The heater runs until the room reaches 46°F, then shuts off. This feature helps protect plumbing in unoccupied rooms during cold weather. It can be disabled via Auxiliary Control A3.
Heat Sentinel
When activated, the Heat Sentinel turns on the air conditioning if room temperature reaches 85°F — even when the unit is in the OFF mode — and shuts off when the room cools to 80°F. Default factory setting is OFF; activated via Auxiliary Control A3.
SmartFan Fan Cycle Control
The SmartFan feature allows the indoor fan to operate differently in cooling versus heating mode without requiring seasonal manual adjustment. Factory default: continuous fan in cooling, cycle mode in heating. Both settings are independently adjustable via Auxiliary Control A1.
Two EC Fan Motors
All units include two permanently lubricated, totally enclosed electronically commutated (EC) fan motors — one indoor, one outdoor. DC motor technology enables soft-start operation and variable speed for quieter performance. The outdoor fan automatically selects the most efficient speed based on operating conditions.
Composite (SMC) Base Pan
The base pan is constructed of sheet-molded compound (SMC), a non-metal composite material. Unlike steel base pans, the SMC base pan does not rust and eliminates a common long-term maintenance issue in through-the-wall applications where the base pan is exposed to weather and standing condensate water.
Corrosion Protection
Corrosion protection is standard on most Zoneline units (except Makeup Air models and ICR-equipped heat pump units, which are not recommended for coastal or corrosive environments). The RAB42PG polymer wall sleeve provides additional corrosion resistance for coastal installations.
Upfront Interchangeable Filters
Two interchangeable filters are accessible from the front of the unit without removing the room front. Filters can be cleaned by brushing, vacuuming, or back-flushing under a faucet.
Electronic Temperature Limiting
Eight independently programmable cooling temperature limits and eight independently programmable heating temperature limits. Factory default: 66°F minimum cooling, 78°F maximum heating. Limits are adjusted via Auxiliary Control A5.
Remote Thermostat Compatibility
All AZES, AZHS, and AZVS Series A units accept Class 2 remote low-voltage thermostats. Remote thermostat operation is enabled via Auxiliary Control A6. The AZVS additionally supports two-way communication with the RAK190V thermostat, enabling real-time data exchange between the unit and thermostat for more precise temperature and humidity control.
GE Appliances offers a complete line of compatible thermostats:
| Thermostat | Series | Type |
|---|---|---|
| RAK190V | AZV, AZH, AZE | 2-Way or 1-Way Communication |
| RAK180W1 | AZH, AZE | Wireless energy management |
| RAK160W2 | AZH, AZE | Wireless |
| RAK150VF2 | AZV, AZH, AZE | Two fan speeds |
| RAK149P2A | AZH, AZE | Programmable, one fan speed |
| RAK149F2A | AZH, AZE | Two fan speeds |
Central Desk Control (CDC) Compatibility
All Series A units are compatible with two-wire Central Desk Control systems. The RAKCDC connector accessory (purchased separately) provides a 3-pin interface for on/off control from a central point — typical in hotel applications where units are enabled at check-in and disabled at checkout. The CDC system can also be wired to door contacts to shut off the unit when a balcony or patio door is opened. Freeze Sentinel and Heat Sentinel remain operational regardless of CDC state.
Wi-Fi SmartHQ Management Ready
All current Zoneline models include a built-in SmartHQ Connect module. When connected to a compatible building Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz, WPA/WPA2-PSK, no captive portal), property managers can access remote monitoring, batch temperature commands, energy consumption data, and advanced diagnostics through the SmartHQ Management platform. SmartHQ Service provides technician-level diagnostics, fault codes, service documentation, and parts lookup from a mobile device.
Auto Power Recovery
After a power failure, each unit’s microprocessor uses randomized restart logic to prevent multiple units from restarting simultaneously — avoiding power surges that could cause secondary outages in multi-unit installations.
Two-Position Discharge Grille
The indoor air louver is reversible, directing discharge air at either 45° or 65° from horizontal. For high-wall installations, the 45° position provides the most horizontal air throw. Position is changed by removing the room front and rotating the louver section 180°.
Designed and Assembled in America
All Zoneline units are designed and assembled in America.
Heat Pump Operation and Energy Savings (AZHS and AZVS)
Heat pump models (AZHS and AZVS) save energy by using refrigerant cycle heating rather than electric resistance heat as the primary heating method. The COP (Coefficient of Performance) for the AZHS series ranges from 3.3 to 4.2 — meaning the unit produces 3.3 to 4.2 times the heat output per watt of electrical input compared to electric resistance heat at rated conditions. For the variable-speed AZVS, the HSPF2 seasonal efficiency rating of 8.0 reflects performance across a full heating season of varying outdoor temperatures.
AZHS Heating Logic (Hybrid Mode, Default)
The AZHS uses sensor-based logic to select the heat source based on both indoor and outdoor temperature conditions:
| Room Temp vs. Set Point | Outdoor > ~35°F | Outdoor < 25°F |
|---|---|---|
| 1.8–2.9°F below set point | Heat pump | Full electric resistance |
| 2.9–4.0°F below set point | Heat pump + 1KW electric (Boost) | Full electric resistance |
| More than 4°F below set point | Full electric resistance | Full electric resistance |
The heating mode can be adjusted via Auxiliary Control A8: Electric Heat Only (EH), High Demand (Hd), Hybrid (HY — default), Boost Heat Pump (Bo), or Heat Pump Only (HP).
Reverse-Cycle Defrost
Zoneline heat pump models use a demand-initiated reverse-cycle defrost system. The microprocessor evaluates compressor run time, outdoor air temperature, and outdoor coil temperature to determine when defrost is needed. During defrost, refrigerant flow is reversed to direct hot gas through the outdoor coil; full electric resistance heat activates during the defrost cycle to maintain room comfort. Defrost runs a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 9 minutes, terminating when the outdoor coil reaches 68°F.
Internal Condensate Removal (ICR) — Optional on AZHS and AZVS
Heat pump units generate condensate during heating operation. The optional factory-installed ICR system minimizes the amount of water draining from the wall sleeve during the heating season. ICR units are not compatible with corrosion-protected chassis and should not be specified for coastal environments.
Optional Features and Configurations
Corrosion Protection
Standard on most non-MUA, non-ICR models. Recommended for installations within 1–2 miles of coastal areas when using the AZHS series. Makeup Air units and ICR-equipped units are not available with corrosion protection.
Makeup Air Module (AZVS Series Only)
The Makeup Air configuration provides a factory-installed dedicated fan system that delivers continuous, dehumidified outdoor air at 30–50 CFM (adjustable in five preset increments via Auxiliary Control B1). The motorized vent door closes automatically when the room is unoccupied if paired with a compatible occupancy sensing thermostat. Makeup Air models are approved by UL, CEC, NRCAN, and AHRI and comply with ASHRAE 90.1-2013 minimum efficiency requirements. Makeup Air models are not recommended within 1–2 miles of coastal areas and should not be used with ducted installations.
UVC (Ultraviolet-C) Module
Available on select AZVS configurations. The UVC module operates when the unit fan is running, providing in-unit air disinfection. Activated via Auxiliary Control B5.
Ducted Installation
AZES and AZHS Series A units can be ducted to condition more than one room using the RAK601B/602B duct extension, register, and trim flange accessories. Ducted applications require fan boost (Auxiliary Control A7) and are not compatible with Makeup Air configurations.
Acoustic Wall Sleeve (RAB42MGSTC)
An acoustic version of the standard metal wall sleeve is available. It includes an additional layer of Owens Corning AcoustiZorb insulation (8mm) that raises the Zoneline installation’s STC rating to 31. Recommended for high exterior noise environments such as airports, highways, or urban locations.

Is Air Distributors an authorized GE Zoneline PTAC distributor?
Yes. Air Distributors Company, Inc. has been an authorized GE Zoneline distributor since 1991 — over 35 years of partnership with GE. We supply contractors, property managers, and facilities managers exclusively, with wholesale pricing and warehouse-direct inventory.
What is the difference between the AZES and AZHS series?
The AZES is a fixed-speed PTAC with electric resistance heat only. The AZHS adds heat pump operation, which extracts heat from outdoor air down to 25°F before switching to electric backup heat. The AZHS uses significantly less electricity for heating compared to the AZES in moderate climates, making it the preferred choice when heating costs are a factor.
What replaced the GE Zoneline AZ45 and AZ65 series?
The AZ45 has been replaced by the AZES series and the AZ65 has been replaced by the AZHS series. Both replacements fit the same standard 42″ × 16″ wall sleeve and accept the same power connection kits, making them direct drop-in replacements for existing installations.
What is the AZVS "Perfect Control" series?
The AZVS is GE’s variable-speed inverter PTAC. Its compressor modulates output continuously from 4,000 to 15,500 BTU rather than cycling on and off at full capacity. The result is more precise temperature and humidity control, quieter operation, and higher seasonal efficiency (SEER2 16.3 / HSPF2 8.0). The AZVS heat pump operates down to 0°F, compared to 25°F for the fixed-speed AZHS.
Do GE Zoneline units require a separate power connection kit?
Yes. A power connection kit is required on all Zoneline chassis and determines the electric heat output. Kit selection depends on circuit voltage (208/230V or 265V), amperage (15A, 20A, or 30A), and whether the installation uses a line cord, sub-base, or direct connection. Air Distributors can assist with kit selection when you provide the circuit specifications.
Are GE Zoneline units compatible with existing wall sleeves?
Yes. GE Appliances has maintained the same 42″ × 16″ wall sleeve dimensions since 1961. Current AZES, AZHS, and AZVS chassis fit existing sleeves from all prior GE Zoneline generations without modification.
Does Air Distributors carry GE Zoneline accessories and parts?
Yes. We carry the full GE Zoneline accessories line including wall sleeves, sub-bases, power connection kits, thermostats, exterior grilles, drain kits, and other components. Contact us with your specific part or accessory requirements.
